  • Monitor Calibration Effected by ‘Video Output’ Settings?!

    Hi all,

We just recently upgraded to MC v. 5.5 with a W7 machine on the avid approved tower listed in my specs below. We are also running a Nitris DX. We have a Panasonic BT-LH1700W monitor that has been working like a charm, and all seemed to be fine and dandy after the system upgrades. Just last week, I turned the monitor on and everything went green tinted. I checked with my colleague to see if he might have adjusted any of the settings on the monitor (chroma, phase etc) knowing that I had not touched anything, but he also said that he hadn’t made any adjustments as it was properly calibrated.

Could the change be related to the “Video Output” settings at all? We have tried adjusting these with no luck so far, but thought I would ask. We have had issues at least with MC 5.0.3 where MC seemed to reset itself to default settings in terms of AMA, Digital Cut etc, so I thought perhaps this might also be the case with the Video Output.

It’s been quite some time since I’ve calibrated a monitor, and never with Avid. Can anyone point me to some good references for calibration? I’ve done a bit of digging myself and it seems as though you need a color temp probe to do it properly. Is that absolutely necessary?

The monitor is LCD and roughly 4 years old. I wouldn’t imagine that it would have degraded in quality that drastically and seemingly over a weekend.

    Thanks for any input!

Are you feeding the monitor HD-SDI or component from the Nitris DX box? If component, check your cable connections to the monitor. Put all the adjustments in Video Output Tool on their default positions and select SMPTE color bars. Is the monitor still green?

It’s unlikely that a Panasonic LCD would drift that much over a short period. If you are feeding it good signals, it’s likely the monitor is sick.

We have several 1700s that are a few years old, and we never had to adjust any of them.

    Hi Bill,

Thanks for your response. We are feeding HD-SDI from the Nitris box, not component. All connections seem to be proper and secure.

It will be a bit of a tragedy if it is already giving out on us…I doubt we have the budget for a new one or even repairs.

Good to know someone else has been working with this and still finds it reliable though. When you say you’ve never had to adjust your monitors, are you referring to adjustment after initial calibration or from the get go of hooking the monitors up and feeding video through?

And of course, in my haste to solve the issue I started adjusted the image settings on the monitor (phase, brightness,etc.). So now should we pinpoint the issue as related to MC, I will be forced to readjust again! Oy!

    Thanks again for your input!

Ours all had acceptable calibration out of the box and stayed that way. Do you have access to an HD or NTSC waveform monitor? That would tell you whether the monitor or the Avid is green. (Unfortunately the 1700s don’t have the vectorscope display inside the monitor.)

Quick Update: We are connected via component to our Beta Deck and SD-SDI to a miniDV deck. I just checked the SD input, no green tint. Just had to re-adjust via color bars after initially adjusting the monitor settings (phase, chroma, etc.) when the problem first arose.

We do have a BrightEye 54 Analog/Digital SPG & TSG sync box linked to the Nitirs connected via SDI. I must admit I don’t know much about this piece of equipment and the role it plays in the whole system. Obviously, it’s related to sync?! It has not been altered and seems to be powered up and functioning as it should.

Any thoughts on how to fix a sync issue? I’m feeling a bit clueless on the topic right now, but will start reading and researching.

Comforting to know it’s a sync issue as others have suggested it may be monitor degradation.

whoops just saw your latest post before uploading my last post. We have the built in vectorscope in MC, but no freestanding scope unfortunately. Though I think I have narrowed the issue to a sync or maybe a bad cable issue? perhaps?

    Thanks again for your input.

Don’t know if it is related at all but worth a try. On 2 different systems I have to go in and toggle between Output settings to get rid of something similar. On one, using the Matrox mini I have to switch between RGB and YUV then back to RGB to get rid of green output. The other using Mojo SDI switching between Component then Composite, then back to component in the output settings gets rid of the purplish screen. Need to do this on each system after launching every project.

Hmm, thanks for the input. My colleague says they had similar issues with the Adrenaline system and as you suggested, the fix seemed to be changing then restoring the output settings. I just tried that with no luck yet. I was able to remove the color tint by restoring the factory settings of the monitor itself, via the monitor’s menu, but now rather than a funky colored picture output all I get is black with a couple of white stripes. The monitor recognizes that there is a source connected that specific input and I have tested a couple of different cables and input/output ports on both the monitor and Nitris DX. I feel I can safely say it’s not a bad cable or cable connection. Any other suggestions? I guess I’m back to a sync issue and I’m not sure how to handle that.
