  • Mojo and Internal SATA 2 RAID?

Posted by Ben Wharton on September 18, 2005 at 1:26 pm

I couldn’t find a completely clear answer on this searching the archives, so:

I already have a successfully working self-built PC Avid Xpress Pro system but would like to build a more powerful system to work with a Mojo. I appreciate the PCI segmentation issue with using Mojo and external storage but would like to know of anyone running Mojo with internal striped drives (RAID O).

I suspect that Avid may not like certain built-in RAID solutions and that 3rd party RAID cards may be needed. It would be great to hear of anyone out there with success stories of Mojo and internal RAID systems on a PC. Motherboard/chipset, drive type, 2 or 4 way stripe and any issues they came across before nailing the configuration.

    Thanks.

you will not like my answer. I use SATA on FCP systems all the time, and tried SATA on AVID products. You absolutely need a dual PCI buss computer like the HP xw8200 becuase the Mojo will inhibit the SATA host card if it is on the same buss. I put in a SATA 4 drive system on an AVID Adrenaline, with great success using a HP xw8000, then tried a 2 drive system on a newer xw8200, and it worked too (1:1) but you had to render the effects. So I thought I was a big shot, and stuck the same Firmtek SATA host card in a cheapo mid priced DELL running Xpress Pro with Mojo. The system choked and would not play back – EVEN WITH a third party FW400 card for the Mojo. You need that second PCI buss, which I guess is why AVID chooses the HP xw8200 or Dell 650 (750) for the only approved computers for Adrenaline and Mojo. Sorry – cheap drives, but no cheap computer.

Oh how well you know me Bob!

    Thanks for the swift reply.

I think building a machine with a Tyan MB would be the cheaper option as far as going the segmented PCI route is concerned is it’s a MUST. HP is just so overpriced.

I’m still under the impression that somone had got Mojos and internal RAID working on a non segmented PCI PC system. I could be VERY WRONG. Anyone else with alternatives to Bob’s “depressing” story? Or more of the same?!

    Bob,

I have a xw8000 built to Avid specs by my reseller. I would like to add the SATA card and drives as well. Can you tell me what slot the SATA card should go in to be on the second PCI bus? Or is it the only other slot for this type of card?

    Thanks,

You can stick the SATA card into slot 4 or 5 on the HP xw series computer – you can even stick TWO cards in both slots 4 and 5. I have personally only tried the Firmtek SATA I card, which works well (you need to load the XP driver that comes with the CD with that controller card). I know that Sonnet’s Tempo X card now also supports PC’s, but I have not tried it yet. The Firmtek comes in a 2 port or 4 port version, but I am only aware that the 2 port is for the PC only – I could be wrong about this, but I have only use the 2 port Firmtek (and I have used TWO 2 port firmtek’s in both slots 4 and 5). Slots 1 and 2 are shared with the native Firewire 400 port, which is used by MOJO or Adrenaline. I use the standard Microsoft Disk Manager to stripe the drives together.

    Thanks, Bob.

I’ll do this and report back my results.

I have Mojo Working with an internal SATA raid. If I’d have to look at the exact motherboard model, it’s anasus, and the SATA raid is connected to a raid controller on the motherboard. I think I have a p4pE deluxe. I tried the SATA raid with the promise controller and that would not work, but the intel one works fine.

other system specs are a single p4 3.2 ghz and 2gb ram,

    running XprostudioHD.

I have an xw8200 system built to avid specs and I’ve yet been able to get my sata’s to work. I keep getting overruns when trying to digitize. My promise fastrak 150 tx4 card started out in slot 7 but that proved to be unsuccessful because it shares the bus with the scsi controller. I moved the card to slot 5 and thought I had it licked. Did an capture session with no problems but the next day kept getting overruns when trying to digitize. I have 2 seagate 7200.8 internal sata’s striped raid 0. I’m also running 3 Ext FW drives on a seperate FW card which I relocated from slot 5 to slot 7. So far that’s worked fine. I also have the mojo on the built in fw port. Short of starting over is there something I’ve missed.
