    Hi,

Been trying to figure this out for the past day or so and can’t…

I’m trying to make a basic representation of Manhattan Island using a Grid Array and a Random Effector to create the buildings. My problem is that the Grid Array only creates a square (or rectangle) and the island isn’t a square…

What I’d like to do is have the buildings only show up within the confines of the Island outline…is there a way to do this? I’d like to use the animation tools within the Grid Array and Random Effector which is why I don’t want to just convert it to an object and delete the buildings that I don’t need…

    Thanks,

    Christian

Yep, you can do it several ways. First, if you have geometry in the shape of the island (extruded spline), you could clone the buildings onto it directly using “surface” mode.

Second, you could use the grid array with a Shader Effector. In this case you’d need a bitmap of the island’s shape, and use that in the Shader Effector to drive the clones’ visibility (in the Parameters tab).

    Thanks for the info…

Kind of new at all this, could you explain more about using the surface mode? Can’t seem to find that anywhere…

    Thanks,

    Christian

Okay, so I found the “Surface Mode” thing, but that still arranges the clones around the edges of the extruded spline instead of in the center…

Sorry, I should have been clearer. You set the cloner to *object* mode, then drag your extrude object into the Object link box.

Then you need to change the *next* Mode setting (under “up vector”) from the default “vertex” to “surface.”
