    Hi
I’m working with MoGraph and I’m trying to do the following: I have a grid array of clones, with a random effector shifting their position. What I’d like to do is animate the clones shifting into an ordered array by reducing the random effector’s influence. The trick is I’d like the shift to look like a boat’s wake. To be more clear, let’s say I have a object, which is about the width of a single clone, fly over the array. As it passes over the array, a V-shaped area of clones (growing larger as the object passes over more of the grid) moves from their random position to their ordered position. And when the object has flown over completely, they are all ordered. So it’s like I need a linear effector in the shape of a volumetric cone. (When I had first thought of this, I thought “Source” falloffs could be volumetric objects rather than just splines.)

    Any ideas? TIA–tom

Off the top of my head, I would use a shader effector to weight the clones, then animate the shader or shader effector to achieve the desired result.

you could use an inverted cone falloff in the Random effector if the flyover object is going straight, like this. If it’s got a curved path I’d go with Adam’s solution.

Adam, Brian, thanks for the input. Brian–I opened your file but something’s funky–none of the objects display unless I render the scene, and when I checked the Random Effector settings, under Falloff Shape, the field is empty. If I change the setting (selecting, say, Box) with the drop down menu, the scene appears.

Is there a plug-in you’re using that allows you to assign a cone shape in that field, that perhaps I don’t have? The only module I own for C4D is Mograph.

Nope, nothing fancy going on, no plugins being used at all, just MoGraph. C4D 10.506

Here is what it is supposed to look like. (it’s a QT H264 hopefully you have the latest QuickTime)

    Hi Brian

geez–that’s exactly what I was aiming for. But I have no idea where you’re selecting Cone for the falloff. My only options are “Infinite, Box, Capsule, Cylinder, Linear, Source, Sphere”. And there’s no cone option listed in Help either. I’m running 10.506 as well.

any ideas what I’m missing here?

Well, I do have the Studio bundle but unless MoGraph gets another shape because of that (and I do _not_ know that) I’m only using MoGraph here so you should see what I see. For me it’s between Capsule and Cylinder in the Random Effector/Falloff/Shape chooser.

It’s not in my Help either but it’s there. Maybe a reinstall? Maybe somebody knows more.

Well this just gets stranger and stranger–I sent a query to Maxon tech support and the tech who responded doesn’t have “Cone” available on any of his installations.

Well a Capsule can be pinched at one end so it looks like the Cone falloff I have, not quite the same but very similar. Does this one work for you?

that works great, Brian. Thanks for all your help. And maybe one day we’ll find the Gremlin that added Cone to your Falloff menu.

    best, -tom

Gremlin discovered by Maxon Tech Support:

Thanks for the screenshot. I’ve checked every version of CINEMA 4D from R9.6 up to the latest beta version on both Mac and Windows and can’t find that falloff setting available. Doing some more research we found that this falloff is available if you download the Smooth 1.5 plugin available at this link: https://www.welter-4d.de/fplugs/freeplugins_en.html

    cheers, –t
