Mograph Cloner + Dynamic Body: who to stop dynamics?
Posted by Pierre Tessier on March 20, 2017 at 5:22 pmAdded a dynamic tag to a cloner object (spheres). Spheres fall down and hit the floor. Some bounce around and stop. A few keep bouncing around forever. How do you prevent that? I cranked up friction, linear damping etc. Those object won’t come to a rest.

March 21, 2017 at 2:02 pmLinear Velocity Threshold is not doing much. Is there a specific value that I should put in? It seems to me that the more clones there are and the smaller they are, the more unstable is the dynamics. Should I increase the project’s scale?

March 21, 2017 at 3:44 pmThe velocity threshold basically sets the floor for how fast an object can be moving to still be calculated by the dynamics engine. The setting really depends on the scale of your project.
As far scale goes generally, you probably don’t want to work at too small a size, but you can (and should) adjust the dynamics scale setting in Edit>Project Settings>Dynamics. The default value is 100 cm (or units). If, for example, your dynamic objects are only 10 cm across you would reduce that value to 10.

March 21, 2017 at 4:26 pmIs there a way to tell C4D that after x number of seconds, all objects are resting in their final position and dynamics has stopped? In real life, when spheres are dropped onto a floor, they will stop rolling shortly after, specially if there is high friction and the spheres are heavy.

March 21, 2017 at 7:23 pmI don’t know of a way to set a time limit per object, but you could do it for all by keyframing dynamics off.
I think I mislead you earlier. Since the objects are rolling you need to increase the angular velocity threshold (not linear velocity) to make them stop when they slow down. Try cranking it to 145 – 180 degrees.
So basically, from an artistic (as opposed to realistic) viewpoint, I think you have to play with Dynamics>angular velocity threhold, Mass>Rotational Mass, and Force>Angular Damping to achieve the look you want. The distance objects will roll is influenced by all three parameters. Aerodynamics>Drag also has some effect.
