    I’m trying to make this…

(which i obviously have) but it currently was made with a lathed spline and surfaced with an alpha channel mask to make the “character pointy things”.

It kinda looks ok but i’m running into not having good DOF renders cos of the alpha mask on the object – the places where you see through the alpha’d crown doenst have DOF, the sides look nice.

I have now made up this

from an illustrator artwork as a ‘true’ model but when i try to ‘bend’ it round into a crown the polys go mad..
I know i need to subdivide out the bottom area so it will ‘bend’ properly but cant get it to look smooth like my initial lathed render.
I seem to get ‘hotspots’ of my poly’s

can i do this with a lathed object and cut the figures out with a boolean.
i could setup a cylinder and manually recreate each of the ‘character pointy things’ but that seems like alot of work to get them to be the same..

anyone any other ideas, workarounds or shortcuts??

BTW: C4d 11 and a bit of a noob to it!!

You can do it with a bend deformer. The key is to have enough subdivisions in the spline you extruded, and to use the Type>Quadrangles, and regular grid options in the extrude object caps tab. Reduce the width parameter until you get a smooth result. Caution: if you reduce it waaay down it can hang Cinema.
