  • Modeling particles to a path

    Hi all

I’m in the very early stages of a project where I’m going to try and create shapes and text out of various shapes which I want to animate using particles (snow flakes, rain drops, clouds – to mention a few). I want o composite these into live action footage in a photo-realistic kind of way. Huge undertaking I know.

Anyways, what I’m wondering is: do you think after effects is up to this? mainly – is it possible to conform/model particles to a path?

I suspect I may be better off doing this in maya and then compositng it in AE. I know basically nothing of combustion, perhaps it would be better. I also know nothing about maya but am keen to learn.

    strange question i know.
thanks in advance you guys are always awesome

Trapcode particular is the right plugin for you. Look at their gallery to see stuff the way you are thinking of

If you want the particles to conform to a true 3D shape, it’s very easy in Maya. Basically model and animate your object in Maya. Convert the model to a softbody. This makes every vertex turn into a particle. Now just hide your geometry leaving just the particles. That’s it. Now just decide how you want to render your particle. Or instance a snowflake texture as a sprite to these particles.
