Mocha tracking data export is giving static keyframes (all keyframes are same)
Not sure why this is happening, I’ve done a successful track in Mocha, like I’ve done in the past, using a single X-spline. It tracks correctly, grid and surface look good. I go to the Export Data section, click “Export Tracking Data” and choose AE Transform Data.
However, upon pasting it into AE (or TextEdit… or even saving it from Mocha). All the keyframes for any given parameter are the same. Position never moves. Rotation never changes. So as I’m at a loss as to how I can actually get my tracking data back into AE.
Any suggestions?
EDIT: Of course I do something to figure it out. So maybe I’m doing something gnarly but upon import of my clip, I chose to import frames 295 to 353. In order to successfully export the tracking data, I had to (in the standard “timeline” of Mocha) set the in point BACK to frame 0. Not sure why this is the case. It was playing back my frames perfectly and had auto-filled the in/out points to match my clip’s frames.
This might also explain why I kept having to reset my layer in points to 0 to get them to show up on my frame.
Anyone else having crazy issues with Mocha CC?

Hi Ross, thanks for your response.
So I think the problem stemmed from my not trusting the software to do its own thing when I chose “Track in Moch AE” from the Animation menu in AE. When it was importing the clip, it asks for a frame range. For my clip, it said 0 to 1500 or something, but I only wanted 295 to 353, so I changed the import range.
Later I realized that leaving it alone imported the whole clip, but auto-set the in/out points to my desired range and everything worked perfectly fine.
So I was just making some wrong assumptions!

A similar thing is happening to me but it only happens when I do a manual track. I’m brand new to mocha so it’s probably something simple. Please help me, I have to get this project done in the next couple days!

Manual track only represents the “SURFACE” the blue box that represents your tracking data.
If you want to hand roto a mask, you do not need manual track on, simply animate the mocha spline shape with keyframes.
I suspect that you have not tracked, so any tracking keyframes would be blank. If you want to spline/mask keyframes, you export shape not track.

Thank you for your response. I did not quite understand what you said though. I am trying to track the front of the guitar. I tried to track it normally using a few markers i had made. But the shot was noisy and out of focus so I tried to manually track it. I selected manual track and animated the spline to follow the point using the auto key frame tool. Everything lined up nicely but when I exported tracking data all the key frames were static. I did countless tests and every time I would track normally the data exported fine. But whenever I would modify the spline with key frames the exported key frames would all be the same… I also tried exporting shape data and still the same thing none of the properties move just a bunch of the same key frame over and over and over. Not sure if this is relevant but the grid and surface are not moving with the spline. PS: In the last image I posted, the key frames you see are the ones for the hand animated spline.

I believe that you are manually moving the spline but not moving the track data.
Turn on the “Surface” button. (see viewer control documentation if you do not know what the surface button is: https://www.imagineersystems.com/support/documentation/#The_Viewer_Controls)
The surface represents the track data, (not the spline). If you are using manual track, but not animating the surface, that is the issue. Position the surface where you want to track and hand animate it.
I would strongly encourage new users to not use manual track. This is a last ditch effort for very difficult tracks. In general when a mocha track fails, you can often adjust the spline and focus on other areas and re-track. Sometimes using the X+ button and finding more areas on the same relative plan to track.
For a guitar, you may be able to track the frets (avoiding the hands) which move on the same relative plane as the body of guitar.

I finally got it to work. I ended up tracking the entire body of the guitar and making an exclusion matte around the hands and the strings. Thank you so much Ross! 🙂

I know it is frustrating watching tutorials, but for mocha a few tips can go a long way to do a lot more advanced tracking.
