MOBO “Overclock”?
Posted by Sleddriver1 on January 29, 2007 at 8:12 pmOkay, getting some things figured out here. I’m looking to bump up from an Athlon XP 1600+ to an Athlon XP 3200+ (going from 133MHz to 200MHZ). My MOBO is a PCChips M848A (v5.0). The documentation says this MOBO supports 200MHz, by using overclocking.
The BIOS provides 200MHZ as a choice on the screen where you can enter CPU speeds.
Is this all I have to do to get my MOBO to handle the XP 3200+? I’d rather not buy a new MOBO if this one will do it.
Thanks!
Tom

January 29, 2007 at 9:43 pmYou are on the right track…replace the CPU and fan, choose the correct settings that match your new cpu in the bios. You may need to update the BIOS, but try without first.

January 29, 2007 at 11:32 pmExcellent. The BIOS does have a selection for 200MHz, so hopefully that’ll cover it. I will also get the new BIOS file if needed.
This should take some of the “weenie” out of my system.
Thanks,
Tom

January 30, 2007 at 4:36 amAre you running the Prodeuction Studio? I don’t think it supports that processor. Those do not have the SSE2-enabled. Make sure of the Adobe System Requirements.

January 30, 2007 at 6:33 pmHis current MoBo is a Socket “A” none of which handle SSE2, He has to move to a socket 939 or AM2 MoBo to be able to get a processor that will work with PPro2, or a intel based board, the socket 939 is limited to top at AMD64 X2 4800+, advantage with the 939 is you can use cheaper PC3200 memory, the newer AM2 MoBos have faster processors/FSB and use DDR2, a point to look at is processors are going to be evolving fast in the next year or so

February 1, 2007 at 12:16 amOkay, I am using PPro7. I have PC3200 DDR (not DDR2) RAM, and an AGP-slotted dual-VGA-out video card I’d like to not replace. Won’t this combo work with a socket A board and an Athlon XP 3200+ chip?

February 1, 2007 at 12:22 amRemember, I’ve been running PPro7 (NOT PPro2) fine for about a year with an Athlon XP 1600+. Based on the feedback here, my interest was in upgrading the CPU, but I’m not interested in upgrading to PPro2.

[Sleddriver1] “Won’t this combo work with a socket A board and an Athlon XP 3200+ chip?”It should, just have a good cooling fan for the CPU, the 3gig and above get fairly hot.
