  • Mobile Phone Turntable Animation question..

    Hi everybody!
I’d like to know how to make turntable animations as those seen on mobile phone commercials.
I’m not sure if these are live footage or 3D cgi.
I used to believe that these were live footage recorded on green screen by setting the phone on something like a (?custom made?) rotary turntable. But recently I noticed on some commercials that the rotation is not only on one axis!.. The mobile phone was rotating in all of its axis showing not only its sides but its up and down sides as well. And all this with moving reflections etc.
That lead me to the conclusion that the phone was actually a 3D model mapped with the actual phone’s textures (photos of its 6 sides) and with reflective materials on its monitor and chrome parts.

    Is my assumption correct?
Please someone guide me because I have to create a demo video for a mobile company and they have already asked me this kind of product presentation style.

PS: I work with AE and 3D Studio Max.

    Thanks in advance

I’ve seen the same rotation used in a number of commercials, and I’d have to say they were done in a 3D application.

By the way, the “up and down sides” are usually called “ends” (just teasing).

Yeah, those Super flips are 3D, much easier than rigging a phone with 30 yards of fishing line that you have to remove!

If you are looking to make a basic turntable for small items, let me recommend a variable speed power drill. I made a small platform (painted Ultimatte Green) with a bit in the center that mounted into the drill. Rig the drill to anything solid and place in front of a green screen. Ta Da!

We did a shoe store ad that had rotating shoes over a techy looking grid animation. It looked awesome. People kept asking who made the 3D shoes because they “Look so real”.

Thank you both for the info!
I’ll start modeling in 3ds Max right away.
As far as the “drill” turntable that Chris suggested it’s a very clever idea for one axis rotations. I always prefer live footage over cg. But for the project I’m working on it’d be impossible to achieve this kind of shooting (..and within the budget of the demo) on stage. But I’ll possibly build one in the near future.

    Thanks again guys!
