  • mobile editing or mobile editing?

Perhaps someone has posted something similar. But I have a question for mobile editors. Do you go mobile, or do you go mobile?

What I mean, is that there is mobile editing: 17″ MBP, External RAID, 24″ monitor. This type of mobile TO ME means, I have a slightly less powerful editing computer, but can quickly move my office to Starbucks, or a client’s location, or if I’m pushed, I can take it on set or travel with it (on an airplane).

Then, there is MOBILE. By that I mean, a 13″ or 15″ MBP, a small RAID (like the CalDigit mini or G-mini). TO ME this means, I can edit from my home office, or take my whole system to India and edit and copy media cards to my RAID as a backup. I can find a hotel or some other internet location and upload my finished project over night back to my customer or colleague. But to do this, I’ve sacrifice some computing power, speed, and comfort because of the small screen.

So how many professionals (meaning you’re getting regular paid work) are truly MOBILE? Meaning you’re using a 15″ or 13″ MBP and a few small devices on a regular basis. Is it worth the sacrifice?

With the first option you have fast storage and professional monitoring at the same time.
With the second, you need to chose between one or the other, but no problem if you are not color grading.

My eyes are paying a heavy toll for having spent almost tree years working on a 17″ MBP.
If you pass few our a day editing on a MB, soon or later you will regret it.
Storage or Pro monitoring is up to you, but a second (bigger) screen is a must.

I have a fully loaded MAC PRO with capture card and broadcast monitor as my main machine. But I have a 15″ MBP (with Express34 slot) that I use for mobile editing. And Caldigit bus powered and larger AC powered faster drives as well. And I have a capture card that works with my laptop (MXO2) for the times I need to fly my rig to Dallas and capture footage on location.

I use it if I have to…and at times I do. But I still mainly rely on my MacPro.
