MJPEG-A Playback (Aurora Igniter through Io)?
Hello:
While poking around the Io website I came across a PDF from September of 2005 that describes how to play back MJPEG-A video through the Io. The PDF describes how to properly tag the field order of the video and states that the Io can play back both upper and lower field first MJPEG-A video. But how do they define “playback?” When I bring video into FCP 4.5 encoded with Aurora’s MJPEG-A Igniter card the Io will display the video on my NTSC monitor (Video Playback set to ProIO-NTSC US-Component YPbPr SMPTE N10-8-bit 422 (720×486)), but when I try to play the video it looks strobey, like it’s the wrong field order. I’ve tried flipping the field order in After Effects to lower field first but that doesn’t help. Is there some button I should be clicking in the Io control panel or elsewhere? Do I need a newer version of FCP to do this?
It would be nice if I could edit this MJPEG-A video smoothly through the Io, especially in the future since Aurora’s apparently stopped making the Igniter card. We mainly do motion graphics, and the Io works great when I need to capture uncompressed video from our Beta SP deck. We usually render out our animations as Avid Quicktimes (for our clients to import into their NLEs) along with an MJPEG-A version to play through our Igniter card. I like using the Igniter since it produces nice video at smaller file sizes, and I have years of animations archived as MJPEG-A, upper field first Quicktimes which I use to edit our demo reels and such.
Thank you.
