    Hi!
I am a seasoned graphic designer and Adobe user, but a Premiere newbie. I am trying to do a project and I have videos that belong to two flavors (reading from Quicktime 7 info box):

DVCPRO HD 720p, 29.97 fps, 960×720, my main footage and format
DV NTSC, 720×480, 29.92 fps, some extra old stuff shot on consumer camera

I started the first sequence by having the program automatically determine specs by throwing in my DVCPRO file in. Then I imported the DV file, and I tried to do Interpret Footage on the DV material, changed pixel ratio to 1.33, but this seems to distort it, while without applying it it seems to look OK.

I failed to find any info in the manual about how to properly mix different video formats in one sequence, and I apologize in advance if this is something obvious, and there is a good tutorial on this issue somewhere. ANY help of tips regarding this are greatly appreciated!

You should be able to just drop the 720X480 footage without a problem, as you have seen. The problem comes in when you look at the footage and realize it is not only much smaller than the other footage, but the wrong shape.

It depends on the footage, of course, and the nature of the video you want to produce, but perhaps putting the smaller footage over a stretched out, scaled up, extremely blurry version of the same footage, the way that TV stations often do, might work out for you.

Or, put them in as Picture in Picture over some other background.

Scaling them up large enough to fit side to side, cutting off the top and the bottom, is generally a last resort.

My suggestion is to use creative license and make it look like you shot it that way on purpose, if you can.

    Steven,

Thanks a bunch for the tips!

Let me just recap if I understand this correctly. If my sequence is set to DVC PRO 720’s 1.33 pixel aspect ratio, and I’m throwing in here a DV file with a 0.91 PAR — Premiere will adjust everything, nothing should be distorted, and no need to Interpret Footage? I am fully aware that I will have to resize that footage, crop it or who knows what to make it work artistically, but on a purely technical/math level — as a starting point, it should land on its feet “as is”, and not distorted, yes?

Also, that DV file has a slightly different frame rate and it is interlaced. Hmm…

I need to do some solid reading/viewing on the Interpret Footage box…

    Thanks,
    Rad
