Mixing OMF and MXF media
Posted by Scott Davis on January 25, 2011 at 1:21 amI am coming on a project that has been ongoing. We have having really bad issues with crashing. I’m trying to suss out the problem. About half of the material was originated DVCPRO HD 720p and brought in 15:1 S, OMF. The other half was XDCAM material brought in as DNXHD145 MXF. Do
Does mixing OMF and MXF files in the same project cause problems?

Gotta be something else.

Are basic set up
Mac OS 10.6.6
QT 10
Avid Media Composer 5.0.3
Media storage are 3 Glyph drives (2 connect by SATA and 1 by FW)There is a lot of footage that is in French so they had translators come in and use the subcap effect to translate. They say they are having the worst crashing on the material with subcap. But also crashing on non-subcap material.
My first night on the project so just trying to get my head around what has been done.

January 25, 2011 at 6:45 amWell, for starters, 10.6.6 is not supported.
See System requirements here: https://www.avid.com/US/products/Media-Composer-Software/system-requirements
As Shane pointed out, OMF and MXF are just fine. Basic troubleshooting:
Quit Avid, kill all databases on each drive.
Relaunch Avid, let databases rebuild. This may take some time depending ont he amount of files you have. See if problem persists.
Create a new project and import Bins. See if problem persists.
Create a new user and a new project, and import bins. See if Problem persists.
Try copying media locally, and turning off external storage. See if problem persists.
As you can see, we’re systemically eliminating constants; all of which can become corrupted; in hopes of finding the culprit.
10.6.6 worries me the most, however.

January 25, 2011 at 8:34 amI agree with Michael about 10.6.6.
However, if your sequence is loaded with subcaps, that generally slows down any system. Whenever I dealt with lots of subcaps, I rendered them all. That seriously improved responsiveness and working speed.

January 26, 2011 at 12:37 pmIf you suspect that it’s subcap, there’s a chance that there is a corrupt font. I know I was getting a number of segmentation faults and had to pull subcap from a system (a version or two ago.)
If it’s a specific piece of media, you can cut your timeline in half, check it then check the other half. Continue until you find the bad piece of media. Try also to take all your media offline and see if you can scrub through the timeline without crashing.

January 26, 2011 at 1:22 pmI haven’t heard or read any specific comments on those versions. I’m mostly on PC, just occasionally working on my MBP under 10.6.4, wich has been good for me.

January 26, 2011 at 2:34 pmThat is very true. Read the system requirements in the ReadMe or on Avid’s website.

January 26, 2011 at 2:56 pmThanks Job, I’ve only been on this gig 2 days and trying to suss out why we are having such a rough time.
So far, we are on an unsupported OS (will be installing a fresh, compatible OS and MC tonight) and using an unsupported Graphics card.
The system say “GeForce Family” is there a preferred model for Mac OS 10.6.3 and MC 5.0.3?
Thanks for all the help!
