I have someone who had a whole lot of old footage on VHS, DVD, and some other formats. We are going to shoot some new footage in HDV and want to put it all together in one timeline. When giving the old stuff to a telecine/tape-machine guy, should we just say put it on DV tape in HDV format? I know the resolution wont be HD, but does it need to be telecined into HD resolution. How does this work?

    Thanks for any help.

TELECINE is a film term…process used to transfer film to tape. What you are wanting is a transfer…typically called a “dub.” But going from Standard Def to HIgh Def isn’t as simple as dubbing, you need to upconvert the footage, and that means getting something like a TERRANEX involved. But with the consumer formats you are talking about…VHS, DVD, HDV…have it transferred to DV then either use Compressor to upconvert, or InstandHD from http://www.redgiantsoftware.com

I would just invest in a Kona 3 board and do all the upconverts yourself in realtime. That’s what we do here.

Or…if dropping 3K on a Kona is a little OTT for one job (nice though they are) consider Digital Anarchy’s ReSizer… $140 bucks and a great tool. Will upscale SD to HD very well. The downside? Rendering, rendering, rendering. Not too slow though.
