Mixing interlaced and progressive on timeline – how to set footage priority?

Here’s my problem:

Footage #1 1280×720 PAL@50fps 720P50, DVCProHD codec
Footage #2 720×576 PAL@25fps, DV50 codec

Timeline is set for footage 1: HD960x720 with DVCPro HD 720P50

After compressing to MPEG-2, I realise that I have problems with motion in footage 2 (which is sign language).

So I figure I must change the timeline setting to match footage #2 instead? I realise I will loose ftps, but I guess that playing progressive footage in an interlaced timeline is better than playing interlaced footage in a progressive timeline?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

All footage must be either 25 f/s or 50 f/s. I would transfer the whole stuff on 25f/s through Episode using ProRes codec. Then everything cuts nicely including a decent color correction.

I do have Episode (both Episode 5 and Episode 6).

Exporting from FCP to ProRes would not be better, then?

What settings do you suggest I use in Episode, bringing a ref movie from FCP? And – ProRes could either be interlaced (upper/lower) and non-interlaced. What should I choose in Episode?

Here you go:

Footage #1 1280×720 PAL@50fps 720P50, DVCProHD codec
Convert this footage to ProRes422 1080i (1920×1080)
Footage #2 720×576 PAL@25fps, DV50 codec
Convert this footage to ProRes422 1080i (1920×1080)
The quality of the DVCPro50 material is acceptable (if progressive!)
Episode is the best conversion programme to me.

Timeline is set for footage 1: HD960x720 with DVCPro HD 720P50
Your timeline then will be ProRes422 Pal

In case your DV footage is 4×3 I would choose a 720p codec or transfer this through FCP into a 16/9 sequence (you have to enlarge the picture and set it into frame).

Thank you Rainer,

I’ll convert the footage using Episode and then I hope I can just re-connect my media (not having to re-edit it all…)

But the DVCPro50 footage (with sign language is interlaced. I’m not sure it’s good idea to blow it up to 1080i…?

Yes it is. We do that a lot with material we shot years ago. The problem you will have is the timecode in case of reconnection to the timeline. Try it with two clips first.

By the way, getting all your clips on the same framerate and codec before you start editing must be part of your workflow. So you have to pay a little suffering money to learn a professional workflow. We’ve payed for it too.

Rainer,

Thank you for your patience – this is the first time I have two different footages that must reside in the same timeline.

Should I simply pick the ProRes 422 1080 encoder in Episode and give it a go? No other parameters to be set?
I can’t see anywhere in the encoder settings (in Episode 6) that it will be 1080i ProRes…
