  • Mixing HPX-170 and 5D ftg – tips/tricks?

Posted by Brad Dececco on January 23, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Hi. I’m a semi-experienced editor, I can do FCP basics. I have a current set-up (Power mac tower, newest FCP etc) I have a job I shot both with the Panasonic HPX-170 at “720 24p N” and also with the Canon 5D Mark II at 24fps (and used the FCP Canon plug in to log/transfer the canon footage.) So I would like to ideally use footage from both cameras in the same sequence, I have organized the footage so it is in separate folders in that same project, I wanted to see if there are any tutorials or methods that are best for this…?

If I understand correctly, the only real difference is that the HPX stuff is 720 and the Canon stiff is 1280, so can I just drop the canon stuff into a 720 timeline and let it get squeezed down? I guess I need to know the easiest way to do this knowing I will be going back and forth between the two formats. The manual doesn’t get specific enough for me to understand if there’s an easy workaround for these specific 2 formats, any suggestions/links greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    No.
Have a look to the Info window.
    There are two HD standard; 1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720.
Build a 1280 x 720 Prores sequence, and drop everything there.

[Brad DeCecco] “I have a current set-up (Power mac tower, newest FCP”

Two things are not right here.

1-Power Macs care at least 4-5 years old so its anything but a current set up.
2-The newest FCP will not run on a Power Mac, it requires a intel processor.

    **Hindsight is always 1080p**

Please excuse the mistake – Mac Pro is what I meant. It’s all current is the main theme, the actual question is with the footage info.

    Hey Man,
I’m looking in sequence settings and there is either:

    HD (960×720) (16:9) or
    HD (1280×1080) (16:9)

And is that the Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ) ?

    Thanks!

I forgot to add, set “Render in High Precision” and “Render Motion Effects: BEST”.

Shoot in 1080p on the 170 next time.

But if I shoot in 1080 on the HPX-170 can’t I not then do 24pN – and then there’s a different set of problems?

Ah, Right, Right, forgot about that part.
