    I’m finishing off a 5-min project that is shot predominantly in DV25 PAL Anamorphic format. However, we also have quite a bit of ‘beauty shots’ in HDV 1080i. Both are shot on the Sony Z1-P camera. The project is going onto a SD DVD for playback on a 42-inch LCD [or possibly Plasma] TV screen.

    It might be a tad bit late to re-think my workflow now, considering delivery is in… 16 hours’ time. But thought it’s worth a shot. Or at least it could help develop my future workflow.

    Note: I’m on FCP 5.1.4, so no ProRes422 for me to work with.

    What I did was to use DV25 PAL as my default timeline setting. I cut my montages in their original HDV 1080i native format in a separate HDV1080i timeline [with a lot of extreme speed changes – 1000% or more; with a lot of traffic, people, horizontal motion]. I then export the edited HDV 1080i timeline into Compressor and output as DV25 PAL Anamorphic. Proceeded to place the converted HDV footage into my standard DV25 PAL timeline.

    Editing-wise, it’s a breeze. However, I’m worried whether this will mess up the SD DVD conversion for LCD/Plasma TV playback – when it comes to fields and all the other fun stuff.

    I only have a self-contained Quicktime movie of the latest cut with me now, which means I could only test out some sample MPEG-2 encoding on my MacBook Pro before I head to work tomorrow. My plan is to use the Best Quality 90-mins MPEG-2 preset, as per normal.

    Expectedly, playing back the .m2v file, I see lots of horizontal lines on the formerly-HDV portions, where there is a lot of sped-up traffic/people. But this is because I’m playing back on the MacBook Pro itself.

    I remember reading that this is probably the workflow [converting the HDV footage via Compressor into DV] to use, before the days of ProRes422. This should give better results, compared to editing the HDV 1080i footage IN the DV25 timeline itself.

    Looking forward to hearing any tips, advice or better alternatives – especially when the final product is destined for DVD delivery.

    Update: Burnt a test DVD in DVDSP and everything looks fine on a 42-inch Plasma TV :] No scary interlacing lines, text is sharp.

    So, this will probably be my workflow until I upgrade to FCS2!
