Mixing Framerates
I’m purchasing an Express Pro HD Complete for a production we’ve shot using DVCPRO50 at a 24p framerate.
If I capture the footage via firewire (not component) at 24p, can I also work with other footage that was captured at a standard 30 fps within the same project? In other words does the Avid software always “think” in 30 fps when editing? This would of course mean that it does its own reverse telecine… I’m just hoping I haven’t backed myself into a corner shooting 24p when I know I also have to integrate other standard video 30 fps footage provided by the client. While I’m at it, I should also ask if I can mix DF and NDF in the same project. I’m very grateful for any insight into this matter. Thank you.

When selecting a 23.976p or 24p project, you are truley editing at those rates and the capture process reverse telecine’s the NTSC footage on the fly.
You cannot capture 30i material and edit it in the same timeline. If you are going to mix frame rates, you will want to be in a 30i project type – the 24 frame material will have pulldown in it preserving the “film look” while allowing your interlace, progressive, and frames rates to be edited together.
You can mix NDF and DF in the product with no problem, you just can’t have the same tape name when capturing have both NDF and DF.

Aside from the question of mixing frame rates in the timeline, which Avid does not yet do, what kind of master do you need to create? If you are mastering to DVCPro 50 at 23.98fps, then you need to convert your 29.97fps material to 23.98fps, which is a nasty conversion. If you are mastering on an NTSC Digital Beta, then you should be editing 29.97fps, and the footage shot at 24 just needs to get 3:2 pulldown to make it work.
