Mixing frame rates in FCP 7
I’m creating my editing reel in FCP 7 and I have some footage that’s 29.97 fps and some that’s 23.98 fps. I’ve heard you shouldn’t mix frame rates in FCP 7 due to sync issues, but if it’s just a short video does it matter? If I don’t notice any sync problems then is it okay to mix frame rates? And could there be dropped frames?

FCP doesn’t lose sync..what it does is not add or remove pulldown properly. Depends on what the video is for. Demo Reels I don’t worry too much about it. Broadcast or web professional delivery, I convert files outside of FCP first, then import.

Half of my footage is 1920×1080 Prores 422 HQ .mov square pixels and the other half is 720×480 29.97 .mov rectangular pixels (ripped from DVDs). Some of the DVD footage is from a 4:3 DVD and the other is from a 16:9 DVD.
I’d like to create a sequence using the settings of the 1920×1080 footage but change the frame rate to 29.97.
How do I create a sequence that will best fit both types? Thanks.

1920×1080 29.97 is a standard timeline settings. Should be easily choosable in the EASY SETUPS. Do that, then make a new sequence.
What is the frame rate of your 1920×1080 footage? Is it 23.98? If your deliverable is 29.97 INTERLACED, then you are in luck…there’s a good solution for converting. 29.97 Progressive..if this is a web deliverable…there is no good solution. Frames will be added oddly and it’ll have an odd cadence…nothing can really be done about that short of a hardware conversion.

Oops, forgot to mention that. My ProRes HQ footage is 23.98. This is a demo reel that’ll go on the web.
I already created a new sequence and changed the settings to 1920×1080, 29.97, ProRes HQ. Is there a difference between between creating a new sequence and changing its settings as opposed to doing the easy setup instead?
And does it matter if the sequence settings codec is ProRes 422 HQ or the regular ProRes 422? The 1920×1080 footage is HQ and the 720×480 stuff isn’t.

Nope…the other way is just easier.

HQ takes up more space. Since this is a reel for the web, 422 would be fine. HQ is 50% larger.
