  • Mixing frame rates in Avid Media Composer

    Hello,

We recently digitized material using the SONY EX-1 and EX-3 (shooting 24p)cameras as well as the SONY HDR-FX1 (using HDV mode at 29.97)

My boss says that he heard Avid has the capability of being able to mix multiple frame rates on a timeline in real time, but a colleague said that was not possible and so he converted our 29.97 footage to 24p to match the EX-1 & EX-3, but my boss is not happy with the conversion results and says it look awful.

Supposedly there is a way to mix frame rates on Avid Media Composer. I, however, am not aware of this and was wondering if this was the case, could someone enlighten me, please?

    Thanks so much!

You can’t mix frame rates in the timeline in MC. You can do it in FCP, but it isn’t done correctly so the end result is bad.

As your boss has already discovered, going from 30 to 24 isn’t pretty. You can go through an expensive standards convert like a Teranex box, but this is very expensive.

Avid has a workaround using the FluidMotion effect. Check here for the process:
