    Hi!

I will try to keep this as short as humanly possible. I have a problem. I have created this problem all by myself, and I feel pretty ashamed turning to you guys (who are more skilled in this area then I am).

I am currently working on a project witch includes several types of video/other formats. Videos from cellphones, PAL SD clips, HDV clips, Pictures etc. No need to explain why, but the mixing of different quality’s is pretty much the idea of the whole project. I work in Vegas 9 and DVD Architect 4.5.

The formats I plan to be using is.

    DV SD Clips
    720/576
    Lower field first

M2TS Clips (Succesfully converted to .AVI since my computer couldn’t handle them)
    720/576
    Lower field first

    Cellphone videos
    Random sizes
    Probably different field orders too.

HDV Clips (filmed with a SONY HDR – HC5E Camcorder)
    1440×1080
Lower field first (apparently, Atleast Vegas tells me they are)

Before even starting to edit I wanted to make sure that the files were possible to keep on the same timeline and that the DVD output would look ok. So, I made a little montage containing every filetype stated above. So far, everything great. 12 hours later Ive tried virtually every setting when putting my file out of Vegas and into Architect. I also tried atleast 20 different settings in Architect. Problem is, I don’t know enough about what Iam doing. Everything looks great (considering the circumstances), expect one thing. THE SONY HDR – HC5E HDV CLIPS WONT STOP INTERLACE FLICKERING. I have now 30 test-burned dvd´s sitting in front of me, and the HDV clips flicker on every single one.

I now turn to you. It would be soooo very awesome if someone would like to share a little knowledge here. I would be forever grateful. I really don’t want to convert the hdv clips. I converted the M2TS files to regular DV, and I did hope that was all. Thanks so much for reading this! Please find it in your heart to save my brain. Iam losing it. Thank you!

Hi. I am not actually a Vegas user (am thinking about it though getting tired of slow final cut updates) but I would say Vegas is mis-interpreting the field order on your hdv clips. All hdv is upper field first as far as I know. Does Vegas have a shift fields option? I would say try that if you haven’t already.

    Thank you!

Dont know about the “shift fields”. Vegas do have an option to right click on the clips and change “media properties”. When doing this, my HDV clips are labelled as Lower Field first. Maybe Vegas is misinterpreting them, witch would be interesting since they are filmed with a camera manufactured by Sony. I tried to ID the clips correctly, “Upper field first”. But to no luck. HDV clips are still flickering when exporting them av MPEG2/Lower field first and burning them un-recompressed from Architect.

This is really getting on my nerves. Thanks again for reading this!

Did you do this from the Project Media? I would right-click on the HDV clips in the Project Media and change their field order to Upper Field First. It is really odd that Vegas thinks they are Lower Filed First. HDV is definitely Upper Field First.

    Thanks!

I tried that, really thought it would work, but to no luck. Then I tried right click -> media properties and set the field order to none (progressive). I also checked the box that said “Reduce Interlace flicker”. That being done, I rendered the full project as a MPEG2 Lower field first and burned it from Architect, and…It worked!!
    The flicker is almost invisible.

I have NO IDEA why this worked, but I am happy as a clown-puppy. Thank you! I would be really grateful if someone could explain the workings here.

I can tell you how it is supposed to work but I cannot explain your results. Vegas will interpret mixed footage correctly if it has the correct information to start with. You should always keep the media properties so that they match the actual media. This way Vegas knows how to interpret it correctly. If you have these settings correct, you can then render to any format and Vegas will compensate for field order mismatch and “do-the-right-thing”.

Some people mistakenly think that if they want a progressive project they must set all of their media to progressive. This is incorrect. In this case, Vegas will not interpret the interlaced footage correctly and it will look horrible. Always make sure that the media properties match the actual media regardless of project or render settings.

In your case, Vegas did not interpret the HDV footage correctly on it’s own so telling it the correct field order should have fixed it. Unfortunately, lying to Vegas that the footage was progressive was actually what fixed the problem. This doesn’t make sense but I’ll bet whatever confused Vegas in the first place has something to do with this odd behavior. As I said, Vegas interprets all of my HDV footage from my Sony HVR-Z1U and HVR-A1U as Upper Field First.

I get the same problem with Vegas 9 Pro with large 1920 x 1080 HD files from Cannon 5d cameras. I go to Project Properties, Video, and set the Pixel Format to 8 bit when I’m EDITING and the flicker goes away. At 32 bit it flickers when I play it. When I render I set it back to 32 Bit and the render USUALLY is ok but sometimes it has suttle flickers in it. I also read a thread somewhere that version 9.0b doesn’t have this problem but I have 9.0c. I have also had success by re-encoding the original to a lower rate, like from 40+mbs down to 35mbs or less using free “MPEG Streamclip” from Squared 5 software. They worked fine at 32 Bit Pixel Format. Hope this helps.
