    Hello

I am working on a video art project for a gallery opening coming up in the first week of November. I am using in FCP 6.0.1 with an After Effects designer and the majority of our footage was shot at 720p60i however there is a small amount of footage which is at 1080i60 and 1 miniDV tape shot in sd not anamorphic mode.

The project is mostly HD footage obviously and we plan to deliver in both HD and when necessary SD as well but for now we want to do everything in HD and worry about SD needs after the fact. My question is what sequence settings should I be using (I would imagine its DVCPRO 720p60i) and what do I need to do with the footage which is not in that format.

I know there is an open format timeline but my questions i believe are more about what things do I and my AE guy need to be aware of in terms of workflow and such. I believe he will be doing a lot of time remapping, compositing, etc. but I also will be doing rough cuts with my selects and possibly doing FCP effects as well as we shape this project.

Any suggestions on workflow between AE and FCP as well as anything people can think of which i should think about / be aware of / explore and experiment with would be super appreciated

    thank you much

    best

[BklynHunger] “the majority of our footage was shot at 720p60i”

No such thing. 720p is progressive. There is no “60i” interlace in progressive. What you have is 720/60p.

Easiest thing to do is use an AJA Kona 3 to convert the 720 material to 1080i or 1080i material to 720 so all the HD material matches.

As for the DV material, upconvert that using PillarBox (vertical letterbox) and fill the sides with a motion graphic.

Hey Wlater thanks for replying to my post – its funny on the camera I swear that it said 60i not p but its my first time using this P2 camera and these formats.

I do not have access to the equipment you mention but I do have Compressor as part of final cut studio 2 – not sure if that will help me in anyway but the majority of my footage is 720p60 – everything else is minimal but important enough to use in the project.

If there are other thoughts and ideas out there from people please feel free to drop some knowledge on the youngin’

    thanks again

Sometimes It depends on how you have to deliver the project as to the editing format to conform all assets to.

You can mix formats in FCPro and that may be the way to go for your project. Perhaps edit everything in DVCPro HD if the majority of material is in this format. Remember, if the content is digital and created in that format, editing in the same format is a 1:1 proposition. You don’t gain nor lose anything. If you are adding color correction, you may want to change the render settings to a codec with a wider latitude like ProRes 4:2:2.
