I have a project shot entirely in DVCPRO-HD on Firestore. The only other video material is a bit of HDV from a Sony HVR-Z1U, which I haven’t worked with before. Having done a review of the archives here it appears that my best workflow is to follow Chris Poisson’s tutorial on importing HDV as ProRes.

My experience in working with Firestore is that video shot that way(Quicktime/P2)imports as 8 bit. I’m wondering about the mix of formats on the timeline. Based on the experience of anyone here, would I be advised to convert the HDV stuff to DVCPRO before putting it on the timeline? And if so, should I proceed with the plan to import it first as ProRes or would it be better to import it “natively” before doing that conversion?

I can run a test, of course, but if some words of wisdom here can save me some time that would be great. I’m working with latest FCP and OS on an Octocore with a Kona 3 card.

If the overwhelming majority of the footage is DVCPRO-HD, and it sounds like it is, you are probably better off converting everything else to that. If you convert to ProRes, you will end up triple compressing it before final output (HDV-ProRes-DVCPROHD).

If your DVCPRO-HD footage was tape based and not file based, there might be some advantage to capturing everything ProRes and editing ProRes. But with file based footage, its probably more hassle than its worth.

Thanks John. You have echoed what was in my brain but I wasn’t really sure. And I didn’t realize that doing the Pro Res import of the HDV material would do so much compression on it. As I say, there is very little HDV stuff so I think importing it into an HDV project, selecting my shots, and then exporting those as DVCPRO might be my best bet.

    Cheers,

    Hey All,

I’m new to COW, so be gentle please. I’m easily Log & Transferring from spiffy new Canon HF S10 with Pro Res 422. Simply selecting Pro Res 422 in preferences.

Now, I have P2 footage that – even with the Pro Res 422 preference selected – will NOT use the codec. It keeps transferring as DVC PRO. Why is this? Can I re-ingest?

I tried to Ingest again with P2CMS program, but I cannot find an option for pro res…

editing with the two formats is not the end of the world, but Rendering is a pain.

    Please advise.

    truly,

    Jordan Brady
