    Hi Tony,
Millions of people mix everyday SD with HD.
If you go to end up in SD, edit in an SD time-line.
No idea why you camera can not play the tapes.

The Canon XL1 is Standard def so it won’t play the HDV tape. (I am assuming you have an HDV tape.)

YOu will need to hire/beg/borrow the camera it was shot on or a deck compatible with the HDV tape. There are two flavours of HDV 1080i or 720p so you need to know which one. Then read the manual that comes with the camera/ deck and it will tell you how to downconvert the HDV to DV for capture via firewire.

I concur with Rafael and Michael,

It is in your best interest to stay in SD. If you do HDV, you will have to convert your SD video to HDV and that will not look as good.

If your timeline is set for SD then the first time you add HDV footage to it, the computer will give you a choice. It will ask if you want to keep the original setting of the timeline or change the setting to the new clip. If you answer to keep the timeline in SD, then all of your HDV footage will be downsized to fit your SD settings. Then you will need to output in SD which should be compatible with your Canon.

If you didn’t want to mix, some HDV cameras allow you to down convert during capture. That way all of your footage will be in SD.

    Good luck.

great .. just what I thought.. I’ll have to see if I can get my hands on a HDV player so I can import it.. cause I sure as don’t have a HD camera.. Or..I’ll just pay someone to import and save it as RAW footage then import it into final cut..
    thanx everyone
