Mixing DV 720×480 with HDTV 1280×720
Hi,
I’m editing a short doc shot primarily on 16×9 DV NTSC 720×480. I have a bunch of motion graphics elements with HDTV specs 1280×720. When I get to the output to tape stage, what is the optimal sequence/output settings to get the best quality onto tape? I would prefer not to sacrifice the quality of the motion graphics by bringing it into a 720×480 environment, but I also know that DV doesn’t look that great blown up.
Any suggestions? 720 x 480 uncompressed? 1280×720 uncompressed? Something else?
And on the hardware end, should we be going digi-beta? HD-Cam? There are no restrictions from the client, but he’s just looking to get the best possible image onto tape.

Your sequence should be and has to be based whatever tape format you are outputting to. If you deliver on DVCam, use a DV sequence. If it’s Digibeta use an Uncompressed SD sequence. For HDCam, use Uncompressed 720p. So you’re kind of asking the wrong question. You should ask what format to deliever on. You ‘ll have to decide that yourself. Render some of the DV to Uncompressed, and render some of the graphics to SD. Then decide which tradeoff you prefer. If the DV footage is well lit, the color-sample artifacts that occur when going to Uncompressed will not be as noticable. Then again, the graphics may look good in SD and if money is a factor, SD will save you a lot.
