  • mixing audio levels by track and not per clip

Posted by Phil Sheldon on February 28, 2011 at 10:56 am

when putting a film together, i usually have a track of narration, one of backing music and one of machine/background noise.

when i use audio levels to mix the levels, i have to do each clip separately which is a pain for the machine noise track as there are loads of really short clips.

there must be a way of linking them together and changing the level as a whole surely??

have tried everything i can think of to no avail. which probably means its really simple and right under my nose

    please help!!

FCP always seems to have several ways of doing things, as long as you can find them. This is a thing I do quite often: Where I’ve got a series of clips that are basically similar (say, a commentary track) adjust one clip – level, eq, compression (whatever is needed) – then copy that clip, highlight all the similar clips and Paste Attributes to put the same level, etc, onto those clips as well. Hope that helps (I dare say others have their own favourite ways of doing things as well).

If you need to change the level of a whole track, highlight All the segments (or just the section you require)

the you can use modify>levels to change the highlighted segments relatively or absolutely.

As was said there are may ways to achieve the result you wish.
