  • Mixing 720P30 and 1080i60: Troubles

Hello. I have searched and reviewed prior posts on this topic, but still haven’t found a way past my problem.

We recently had a three camera shoot in which cameras 1 and 2 – (Sony Z7U and FX-1) shot HDV 1080I 60, 29.97 frame rate. Camera #3 was a brand new Panasonic HMC-150 which shot in AVCHD – settings 720P 30, and frame rate of 59.94. I would say that approximately 70 percent of the footage is HDV 1080i.
My end result is an SD DVD (16 x 9)

After capture & upload to FCP 7, I’ve edited with sequence setting for HDV 1080i60, and included 720p30 clips where needed. All looks great in the timeline, no perceived issues until I created my DVD.
Upon reviewing the DVD, the 720p clips have an unnatural look about them – the motion is just not right, and I haven’t been able to come up with a fix as yet.

I feel that somehow I need to convert the 720p footage to another format, but haven’t been able to do so without the same distortion above. I think that somehow I have to deal with the frame rates or field order, but not sure where or how.

Here are a couple of things I’ve tried:

Changing FCP sequence settings to 720P

Converting 720p footage via Mpeg Streamclip to DV then trying to import as a DV file. The end result here is still unnatural motion.

I’d appreciate any suggestions on how to make this footage work together – there are some parts of this project where the 720P footage must be used.

    Thank you.

    Bill

    Hi Dave

Guilty as charged – I edit on an IMAC.

    Thanks for the direction.

Should I change my Project / Sequence settings to 720P30 first, then apply the filter?

Presently my settings are set for HDV.

    Thank you.

Okay – I changed sequence settings, the compresser to Pro-Res, but left the frame size as is: 1440 x 1080, and have deinterlaced only the HDV clips, and will now render and send to Compressor for DVD conversion.

I’ll let you know how it comes together.

    Thank you.
