  • Mixing 60i with 30P, some questions

Posted by David Soriano on November 6, 2009 at 4:44 pm

hey peeps, i know this has probably gone over ad infinitum, but after a quick search i found nothing specific to my query. I have a sequence in FCP that’s 1080 60i. I shot some stuff for the same vid yesterday but accidentally did it in 1080 30P. I brought this footage in to the timeline and got the green render bar. Videos seem ok together, but i want to make sure i do this right before i continue with the edit.

Should i keep the sequence as is at 1080 60i and keep going or do i need to convert the new footage or convert the old footage? I have already edited about 8 minutes of the 60i footage (it’s a 30 min vid) and there may be a case later where i have to use some more 60i stuff, along with the newer 30P footage shot yesterday.

Thanks for any help, again. FWIW, i am downconverting for broadcast on DVD in SD, 16×9 and am going t ouplaod to Vimeo in HD 1280×720.

On a side note, what’s the difference between the Easy Setup/Audio Video Settings under the FCP drop down menu and the Sequence Settings?

What I would do if I were you, is change the field order to Upper on the 30p footage in your browser, that way when you add it to the 60i timeline, there’ll be no green bar (unless you have different codecs).

how do i change field order of a specific clip?

I was reading the FCP manual and they recommend converting i footage to de-i using Compressor. This would entail re-editing that 8 minute segment, which i suppose i could do, then start over with a 1920×1080 P sequence. How that sound? Unless your method works better.

    Let’s start over.

Do you want an interlaced or progressive movie/timeline?

    Pro, baby, progressive.

    OK.

Then change your sequence to have a field dom of none. make sure that your 30p clips have a field dominance of none in the browser.

Then get a nice deinterlace filter, like revision fx fields kit, apply the deinterlacer to the clips in the timeline. That way you don’t have to deinterlace all of your clips.

    Make sense?

yeah, only is this de-i filter kit a plug-in fo free or must it be purchased? If purchased i’d rahter try something with the software i already have, if possible.

    Purchase, but it’s cheap.

You can use Compressor if you want free, but you’d have to do it clip by clip.
