mixing 24p and 30i
Posted by Alec Gitelman on April 2, 2009 at 4:10 pmHi.
I am putting together a program – to be distributed on a DVD – which contains footage shot in DV-NTSC both in 24p (with 2:3:2:3 pulldown from tape) and 30i, not mentioning graphics and other incidental footage.
what’s my best approach at making the most consistently good looking dvd? this dvd will likely be played on pc’s more often than set-top players hooked up to a tv – so i’d like to keep the 24p look as much as possible, however 30i footage in a progressive timeline often doesn’t look too good. any advice?
Thanks.

April 2, 2009 at 4:55 pmAre we talking 24p that is running at 29.97? Or 24p ADVANCED that is running at 23.98?
BIG RULE: Never mix frame rates in one sequence. So if you have 23.98 footage and 29.97 (30i), then you need to convert one format to the other.

April 2, 2009 at 5:01 pmwell, it’s not 24pa, but it’s 24p that was conformed to true 23.98p using cinema tools. a lot of the footage is like that. but some scenes i need to cut in are shot in 30i. how do i best conform it to 23.98p?
also it’s more of a DVD authoring question, but can i get in trouble if i put both 24p and 30i clips in the same dvd (not same tracks of course)?

Is are no issues authoring a DVD with different frame rates in different tracks. -

April 2, 2009 at 5:12 pmI would conform to 29.97, not 23.98. Add pulldown to your 24p clips to bring them back to 29.97 and edit them into a 29.97 timeline.

Compressor. Turn on the FRAME CONTROLS and put everything to BEST and then go away on holiday for the weekend. This will take a long time.

Yup. Mixing frame rates is never recommended and always problematic.

April 2, 2009 at 5:24 pmI just ran into a problem with a 24P DVD.I had shot DVCPro HD 720 24PN and edited in a 23.976 timeline. Then I encoded a 24P mv2 using BitVice. I saw a 23.976 to 29.97 preset, but no true 23.976 preset so I made my own and encoded.
When I tried to import that into DVD Studio Pro I got an error. I then encoded the file with Compressor set to 23.976 and it worked. I emailed BitVice and quickly was informed by Roger Andersson that DVDSP doesn’t work with 23.978, only 29.97. I never had heard that before. Compressor was actually adding pulldown when making its supposed 23.976. I tried BitVice again using the 23.976 to 29.97 preset and DVDSP was happy.
So I guess the bottom line is if you’re ending up with a DVD and using DVDSP, you may as well work in 29.97 (24 over 60i) since you’re going to have to add the pulldown later.

April 2, 2009 at 5:50 pmso can i just leave the 30i in the 24p timeline, then export using compressor for DVD with “best” setings? or do i have to go into each clip, get source file, convert to 24p, get it back into timeline, etc..? i mean, i’ll kill the next few days doing that and i can’t justify it, even if it does make it look better..

April 2, 2009 at 5:57 pmok… i can believe that…
but i do see a difference in image quality between the footage that was reverse telecine’d and that wasn’t when playing the dvd. what’s going on there? -

April 2, 2009 at 6:02 pmok. why?
i’m sorry, maybe i’m asking the same questions over and over again, but there’s just so much to wrap my mind around.. in addition to seeing what i’m seeing on the screen.
