Mixer as volume control for speakers
I’m using a Decklink HD Extreme card in a Mac Pro to provide analog output to Behringer B2031A active speakers. The Decklink card essentially disables volume control via the OS. I’ve seen a couple of posts that suggest that I need a small mixer between the Decklink card and the speakers. I’ve also seen a couple of posts that suggest that I can control the volume using the master control on the audio mixer in Final Cut. I’m confused and the tech support people at Blackmagic don’t seem that authoritative on a solution, strangely.
My main question is – doesn’t changing the control in the FCP mixer change the audio level for that clip – or does it just change the output signal to the speaker?? Thanks for any help!

Yes,
Changing the FCP master volume will affect the volume of your program/sequence.
Every editing system/suite that I’ve built ALWAYS has a mixer. Otherwise you’ll run into the problem that you are discribing. Plus it’s easier to control analogue sources through an audio mixer.You can pickup a small Berninger mixer for under $100. Since you have powered speakers, you won’t need an amp.

Using a mixer between the decklink card and your speakers is the way to go. It doesn’t even need to be a very fancy mixer. There are several from $50-$100 that would work. I like the ones with XLR inputs and outputs.
I’ve set up an audio patch bay so I don’t have to disconnect the decklink card from the mixer and plug it into a beta deck when I need to lay off masters. It works really well. You might be able to get a cheap patch bay off ebay.
