  • mixed sequences and mixed outputs — combining SD and HD content

i’m working on a project that will primarily use 1080i60 clips. about 30 percent of the piece, however, will use SD NTSC clips. i’m outputting to a variety of media — SD and HD DVD, 16:9 and 4:3 web contexts.

my solution is to put everything together on a mixed sequence with a 960 x 720 frame size (PAR) in order to keep the hi-def of what I shot but to minimize the up rezing of the SD footage (which looks really blown out at 1280 or 1440)

finally, I’m just using FCP 6.0.3’s auto conform feature to up rez the SD content — i tried compressor and red giant instant HD but actually like the FCP up rez best.

i’d love to know if anybody has a better solution or refinement of the above work flow. thanks in advance!

What are you outputting to? What tape format? Do you have a Kona or Decklink?
