  • Mixed codecs workflow question on FCP 6.06

    Hi,

I realize they’re many questions on this topic, but if anyone can post a response to this project I am starting, either to confirm or point me into a better workflow, that would be awesome. I am working on a Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5 from 2005, FCP 6.0.6. Unfortunately, I found out the following information upon arriving in the edit:

I have 6 hours of footage from a Canon D7. I have a few hours from a flip cam. I will have about two hours from a multicam HVX shoot, about an hour from an EX3, and a bunch of SD archive clips. The problem is when I get the HVX footage, I will have to edit very fast for a crazy turnaround for the next day.

I transcoded the D7 and flipcam into Pro Res. I’m assuming I should transcode the EX3 to Pro Res too. I have two questions:

1)I don’t think I will have enough time to transcode the HVX footage into Pro Res, so I’m wondering how the DVCPRo HD footage will play in a pro res timeline? Is it worth the time to transcode the HVX footage into Pro Res, or can I bypass this step.

    2) Should I have the HVX shoot 1080p to match the other footage or can 720p and 1080p/24 play okay in a fcp sequence.

    3) The final output is a 720×480/29.97 quicktime. I’m assuming edit everything in 1080 and then drop into an SD timeline when finished.

I apologize for the length of all the information – if anyone has any ideas or can confirm what I think is the best, please let me know.

    Thank you very much,

    Jake

[Jake Diamond] ” I’m assuming I should transcode the EX3 to Pro Res too”
    No need.

    Shouldn’t be no problems.

If you do so, you will be blowing-up the SD and 720 stuff, only to be downsized later on. Not a good idea.
I would edit 720 or directly SD.

Thanks so much Rafael. The 1080 Pro Res I converted the D7 material to, will that play in a 720 timeline?

If you work with standard sizes you shouldn’t have problems for RT.
Normally you can mix most things (codecs, sizes) on a FC sequence. Mixing different time-bases y where FC doesn’t shine at all.
