Mixed 24P DVCProHD and HDCAM On-Line Problem
Hi Guys — I’m working on a project with mixed HDCAM and DVCProHD 24P footage. I’ve captured the DVCProHD with firewire using the 1400 and DVCPro24Pa Easy set up and have had another facilty capture the HDCAM tapes to the DVCProHD codec using the same settings for my offline edit. The offline is almost done and I asked them to test this process: Recapturing HDCAM and DVCProHD over SDI to 10bit for CC and output to HDCAM/59.94 tape. The HDCAM came in fine but the DVCProHD has problems with duplicate frames. They are using Kona cards in their systems. Any tips for getting this to work? Is it even necessary to recapture the DVCProHD through SDI or should I just have them render it into a 24P 10-bit sequence with the 10bit HDCAM footage? Thanks in advance.

What was the frame rate of the HDCAM tapes? 59.94? Because DVCPRO HD 720p24 is 24 frames per second recorded on a 59.94 tape…there will be duplicate frames. These tapes have the 3:2 pulldown cadence. This is meant to be extracted and edited at 23.98.

I never actually saw the labels on the HDCAM tapes, they were captured at a facility and I got QT files. The DP said he shot both at 24P, 1080. Using a Sony and newish Panasonic camera. Thanks.

Check with the people doing the online, ask them what the framerate of the HDCAM tapes are.

Well, there you go. That footage is frame for frame…the 23.98 stuff from the varicam has duplicate frames.
It should still play fine, and just have the 24p look.

Thanks all. Turns out they have an older deck with no firewire out, which apparently is the best way to read the flagged 24P stuff. So, I’m just going to bring the DVCProHD QT to the OnlIne and not bother capturing those tapes through SDI. Thanks again.
