  • Mix VTS and M2T files??

Posted by Jim Murphy on February 1, 2011 at 11:20 pm

I am working on a wedding demo. Can I use both VTS and original M2T files on the timeline in Vegas Pro 10, or will the VTS files be compressed again? I still have the original DV tapes, but would like to avoid re-capturing if I can. Thanks, Jim

What are “VTS” files and where do they come from?

The VTS files are what I would import from the wedding DVDs of previous customers. I keep the DVDs in my archive. I would import using File>Import>DVD Camcorder Disc. At least, I think that is how I imported VTS files in the past. Thanks, Jim

I assume the VTS files are MPEG2 and if you don’t process them in any way and you render them to the same format, Vegas might tell you that “no recompression required” and just copy them to the target file. I would test one and see. If not, I would use the original source files.

I did a search on VTS files and I believe they’re .VOB (video object) files which are the mpeg files on a DVD. See this link.

But your mixing them with .m2t files which are HDV. If your going to make SD DVDs with these videos, The m2t files will have to be recompressed to SD. But I would render one of the VTS.vob files as DVD compliant mpeg 2 and see if your preview window shows “no recompression required”. If it does then your not recompressing them. Also make sure your project properties are set to 720×480 DV NTSC, if your in the States.

If possible, obtain the source files used to create the VOB files. VOB files are typically rendered/compressed from source.
