I want to purchase the HVX200, but I’m not sure if I should mix my DVX100 footage with HD footage. The footage was shot for a documentary. Will there be a huge difference in what I’ve already shot with my DVX100 and what I plan to shoot in HD with the HVX200? Will there be any problems during editing? I’m not sure what to expect. What would you do?

    Thanks,
    Jeremy

What will your final delivery be on? What format? it is true that DV footage blown up to HD size will not look good, especially when compared to and intermixed with DVCPRO HD footage. BUT…if you project will end up on DVD or some SD format like digibeta, then it would be wise to downconvert the DVCPRO HD to DV and work with everything in that format.

    Hi Shane,

The final format will be on DVD. I hope to get it on network television as well. I’ve only been working in SD video for about 18 months now, so I’m not the brain when it comes to HD. Here’s my stupid question: Is HD only in 1080i or can there be 720 x 480 HD as well? Will I lose my HD quality if I down convert to DV?

    Thanks for your time.

    Jeremy

PS – I read on your site that you started messing with Curious World Maps. I took a look at their demo awhile back and gave up. Let me know if you figure it out!

HD is 1080i and 720p. 480 is DV. 486 is standard analogue SD.

And yes, going from HD to SD will cost you quality…because the beauty of HD is the high resolution you get. But, HD to SD produces really good SD images.

Yeah…Curious World Maps. VERY differnent than any other app I have used. Not intuitive at all, but I am getting there. Finally starting to grasp it.

We’ve had to do this a lot and soon everyone will have to grapple with it. We mix SD & HD, but we never try to fool anyone into thinking SD is HD. We box the SD, or put some other treatment on it so that it fits nicely into an HD frame without trying to double it’s size, which looks terrible.
I think if you keep your project HD, it’ll have more of a chance to sell + it’ll still be valuable when the whole world has gone HD. While our budgets aren’t huge, we still collect a premium for HD delivery and we’re protected for a few years … until SUPER HD with smell o’Rama takes over.
    All my best.
