missing?
Posted by Tony West on November 11, 2012 at 3:04 pmThere have been some nice features added with .6 but it seems like some things are missing that were there before.
1. what happened to the animation editor toggle button on clips in the timeline that was in the top left corner of the clip before?
2. I don’t see an option to select date in the new import window. All I see is name, type and size.
90 % of the time I use “date” because I’m mostly looking for the latest thing I added. By date it’s right there at the top.3. I can’t remember if it was this way before (I don’t think it was) but now in the timeline when I select a clip, the playhead does not move to that position. It just sits there unless I hit play, then it jumps to that spot.
It works correctly in the event window. When I select a clip the playhead jumps to that spot like it’s supposed to.
These three things combined have slowed down the editing process for me.
I have not seen anyone else point out these three things on the cow so I was wondering if it’s just my
version and I need to do another install or what. Thanks folks.

November 11, 2012 at 3:31 pm1. I’ve always found control v much easier to use
2. Right click on column header for options
3. This behavior has been changed. Click to choose clip without moving play head. Option click to choose clip and move play head.

[Nick Toth] “1. I’ve always found control v much easier to use
“That’s fine, but it’s missing right? It was there before and now it’s not. There were two options before.
The way you like to do it with control v and the way I like to do it with toggle right there in the timeline.[Nick Toth] “2. Right click on column header for options”
Thanks for this : ) but in the first column how do I get that to be last “modified”? When I select a folder that has many folders in it, I want the top one to be the folder that I added something to last.
That’s how it was before this update.[Nick Toth] “3. This behavior has been changed. Click to choose clip without moving play head. Option click to choose clip and move play head.”
This seems like an oversight to me. I can’t imagine this is how they wanted it to work. It’s an extra click that wan’t there.

The way you like to do it with control v and the way I like to do it with toggle right there in the timeline.”The problem was, when you reduced the clips size down, it was really easy to click the menu when you are simply trying to move a clip. It simply got in the way a lot of the time.

I think this is preference. I didn’t like the way it was implemented before as most of the time I didn’t want the playhead to move. You can now click in the ‘time indicator’ section of the timeline, and the playhead will also move.

OK Jeremy, I guess I can go with that. At least it’s a rational reason.
Although that switch never got in my way moving clips, but I will go with the majority on it.[Jeremy Garchow] “I think this is preference. Help me with this one J
Before, if I wanted to cc a clip I would click on it and then just move my mouse up to the inspector window and start adjusting.
If I select a clip now and them move the mouse to the inspector window I’m seeing some other clip that the play head is on that I don’t care about at the moment.
I have to then make another click to adjust the clip that I want.
Can you step me through your technique and why it’s faster than before?

It’s not necessarily faster for your needs, although option-click brings back the functionality.
For an exmaple, there are times when you want to select clips in the timeline and move them to the playhead. The way FCPX worked before the update was that I had to either try and remember where the playhead was, or use some sort of marker to mark where the playhead was, or simply guess and refine it later.
Now, I have the option of choosing to move the playhead or not. I, personally, prefer the choice but I can see why it slows you down. You can also click in the “empty” space right above a clip. The inspector will show the top most clip if you have stacked clips.

“Yes, an extra button to push every time or an extra click. Not the end of the world, just extra.
It’s a good example you gave but I do way more tweaking on clips in the inspector than moving the clip to the playhead.
Heck even when I want to adjust the size of the clip it extra now.
The trade off for me doesn’t make sense based on the percentage of usage of the tasks.
I guess I was hoping that this was a bug that would get fixed. grrrrrrrrrrr

November 11, 2012 at 7:40 pmSorry, gotta vote for the current way. The old way seemed like a bug. Glad it was fixed. Why on earth would I EVER want the playhead to move when I select a clip? I have the play head where I want it, now I just need to select the clip so I can open up the inspector and adjust THAT very frame. Or add a keyframe to THAT very frame I’m parked on. Using the C key was an option, but I still had to hover the mouse. So it was silly. Now I’m hard pressed to find a reason to use the C key. I was so annoying everytime I selected a clip and then had to go back and find the frame I wanted to adjust.

I like it better this way too, but I do see Tony’s points.

I see what you’re saying and I see how it might slow things down.
An alternative to this is to option-click the clip and hit shift-t to bring up the transform controls.

November 12, 2012 at 2:13 amOK Jeremy thanks, I will give that a shot.
I see bret’s example also.
I’m cutting this doc right now and I’m dropping in a ton of photos and they are different sizes so I’m doing a lot of work on each pic. I’m doing more clicking on pics and adjusting them than Bret’s example so I hadn’t really thought of his point.
