  • Missing Windows Quicktime Codec issue

Posted by Michael Garske on October 2, 2012 at 5:23 pm

I recently started editing with Premiere on a Windows box from an FCP work station. I’m having an issue with footage captured from tapes shot on a Sony Z1U and captured via FCP log and capture window. These clips also will only play audio no video in QT player.

When I try to import these clips into Premiere here is the error message I’m receiving:

Here is a screen grab of the clip’s format information:

I looked for codecs and thought I had found what I need with the Xvid codec but I can’t find any way of downloading/installing it for Windows.

Does anyone know what codec I’m missing and where I can download it from? Thanks immensely for your help!

If you’re looking for the XVid codec for Windows, you’ll find it here:

Thank you for your speedy response. I installed from the mirror 1 link that lead my here:

    https://www.digital-digest.com/software/download.php?sid=1052&ssid=0&did=1

I installed and restarted my system but I still receive the same error when importing the clip. Quicktime still displays the video as a white screen with audio during playback.

When I installed xvid 1.3.2 it automatically went into the x86 Program files folder even though the downloader says the program is for both x86 and x64. Could this have anything to do with it?

    Hi Michael –

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if it was a problem with the codec being installed for the 32-bit software. I know I have a problem with my 64-bit version of 3D Studio not being able to output Quicktime, since it’s a 32-bit codec. I don’t, however, know an answer to the problem, unless you can track down the 64-bit version on the website, or check whether both versions installed to the Program Files (x86) folder.

It does say on the page that the download is for both x86 and x64 OS so hopefully I can find a solution. Otherwise I’ve got a ton of unusable footage. I’m sure there must be a solution out there somewhere. I can’t be the only person to experience this.

The files play fine in VLC. I’ll continue my hunt. If anyone has any other suggestions I would be extremely grateful.

I’m sorry for the multiple posts but I just want to keep everything current. I tried playing the file from a 32bit Windows OS computer after installing the Xvid codec and am still having no luck. The files of course play in VLC and on Mac just fine.

    Michael –

Are you sure it’s not a proprietary codec that you have to license. I’ve had luck once in a while playing something back in VLC, and it won’t play anywhere else, unless I pay 50 bucks or so for the codec license. Just asking…

Apple has chosen not to make their HDV QuickTime component available on Windows — looks like that’s the problem you’re bumping into here.

Calibrated Software does make a decoder for PCs that reads Apple QuickTime XDCAM and HDV MOVs. Check out the Calibrated{Q} XD Decoder [link] — I think there’s a demo that you can try before you commit to buying.

Other options: have someone with FCP on a Mac transcode to another format for you, or use VLC to transcode.
