Hey guys I often get projects with shows graphics packages and I’m usually missing this Unmult effect. I have unmult from RG that I usually just replace it with. But it is annoying, does anyone happen to know where i can find this? Or is there a built in way to replace effects that i dont know about? I think it’s an older effect possibly but it doesn’t have any info when i open it up more.

    Thanks as always

    Hi Max,

Possibly it’s the older Knoll Unmult version, see here:

You can recreate Unmult using a couple of included effects,

Shift Channels set to take Alpha from Lightness

Remove Background Matting set to black.

There’s a preset in Effects & Presets for this (I think, unless I made / imported it a long time ago)

You’ll find that the default preset can desaturate the original quite a lot. Using Max RGB to Alpha and then remove BG color is I believe the actual recipe unmult uses.

Hey @Filip Vandueren. Can you please elaborate on the effects you would use in AfterEffects to keep the saturation? What is MaxRGB for example. Cheers, Tania

@taniabondaro This is months late, but for those who are trying to use AE’s native unmult and finding that the colors are not as rich as Maxon’s Universe unmult, here is what worked for me:

To your layer, first add the following effect:

    Channel Combiner
    From: Max RGB
    To: Alpha

And then add the following effect:

    Remove Color Matting
    Select color: Black

In your effects panel for that layer, it should show Channel Combiner first and then under it should be Remove Color Matting

You can also use Video copilots VC Colour Vibrance plug in, turn vibrance to zero, set matte alpha to only and boost alpha. Ive not had any issues using it… so far
