Missing Render Files? Please help!!
Posted by Mike Armstrong on February 22, 2007 at 6:28 pmHello,
I’ve been editing a film and recently i opened the project & FCP informed me i was missing 2 render files and then told me that the movie could not play properly without them and promptly closed. I have searched my harddrive, externals, flash drives, memmory sticks and everywhere I can think to find them. I don’t know if they were deleted accidently (although how is anyone’s guess).
Is there any way to open the project without these files? i know which clips they pertain to & can just delete them as i don’t need them but cannot access them at the moment.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

February 22, 2007 at 7:04 pmBetter to have you lose your render files than your media. Open up your project an re-render

February 22, 2007 at 7:07 pmMy project will not let me re-render.
it says “missing render files. cannot play properly” then lets me search for them or ‘continue’ & when i ‘continue’ FCP crashes

February 22, 2007 at 7:28 pmI had a similar problem a while ago,, a couple render files dissapeared on me,, I could open the project, but it wouldn’t let me re-render the un-rendered media. to get around this, I added a random filter and set to 0 (or to have no effect on the media) and then it let me re-render.
I’m guessing you’ve also tried selecting the “forget missing files” option when it prompts you that the files are missing??

February 22, 2007 at 7:35 pmFCP will not even let me open the files so taht I can re-render them with a filter or anything. Also, there is no option to ‘forget missing files’ i only get ‘The movie file “workspace 2- fin-00000040” cannot be found. without this file, teh movie cannot play properly’ & then cancel & search. if i hit cancel it pops up with another missing file or just crashes.

February 22, 2007 at 7:55 pmSounds like you imported a Quicktime reference movie, but no longer have the render files it points to. If you are going to export Quicktime movies for later use, you MUST export them as self contained movies to avoid problems like this.
The only way to fix this is to open not the current project or sequence, but the sequence where this reference movie was created, and re-render it. If you do not have it, you are stuck.

To compeletely cure this issue once and for all and to have it go away completely… First, trash your prefs. Then, using render manager, delete the render files and re-render the entire timeline. That should take care of all issues and get you back on a creative track.

October 1, 2008 at 10:35 amHi. new here. Have been reading for some time and decided to join.
I have the same problem but still unresolved.
I get two render files (“cannot play movie without”) missing, hit cancel (twice) because I know they cannot be found… (although I did a search in Finder and one came up with a broken-lined box in place of the icon and no path)
After hitting cancel, the project opens (“reading project”) and then the choice to reconnect or continue (i’m told 24 render files are missing….) but then the “movie cannot play properly” pop-up comes up again before I can click continue and then the whole thing freezes up and I have to Force Quit.
I’ve tried everything I’ve found on the internet; reinstalled, trashed prefs, render manager…
It only happens for this one project but it’s a biggie and I really don’t want to redo all the weeks of work I’ve done.
Umm… don’t know if it matters… FCP5 on a G5 dual 2gHzRam OSx.4.11 to a LaCie d2 via firewire800, am getting PCI express soon
Thanks a ton, love this place, eager to become a creative calf. Not funny? sorry…
