Hey. I’ve been working on a video for the past few days on Sony Vegas pro 10 and I was so close to being finished. I saved the project after every single change I made to it. Just now though, I tried to open the project and a dialog box popped up telling me that some files were not recovered completely or something like that and it had 2 options. I get that dialog box every time and I usually never have any problems when I just press continue.

This time though I’m missing almost 90% of the editing I did on the time line and I’m back to day one of my project.

Is their any way I can recover the lost work I did? I was told I need to do some digging but I am clueless right now.

People will need a better description of the error message to know why it’s having a problem. What you’ve said so far sounds like what happens if I forget to turn on the hard drive where I store the video and Vegas is allowing me to tell it where the files are. When that happens to me I close Vegas without saving, make sure the files are where they belong, and restart Vegas. Then everything loads properly.

If your .VEG file (the project file) has somehow been damaged then you’ll need someone more experienced to help. But the first thing I’d try if you haven’t been making backups of your .VEG file is run through some old autosaves and see if any of them are better than what you’ve got. They’re in the “C:UsersAppDataLocalSonyVegas Pro10.0” directory.

Sorry to hear about what is unfortunately a known problem with no real solution 🙁
What I can suggest is that you look in the folder where your project was saved for a file that has a .veg.bak extension on it.
This is the backup file that Vegas automatically creates.
Move it (not copy, MOVE) to a different folder, rename it by deleting the .bak portion and try opening it.
If that works, IMMEDIATELY save it under a new name to the original folder.

A habit that I got into a long time ago is to constantly save a working file with a new name every few edits.
    For example, myvideo-01.veg, myvideo-02.veg, myvideo-03.veg, etc.
This way, even if the project gets corrupted, I haven;t lost too much.

    Good luck with it.

[Mike Kujbida] “Sorry to hear about what is unfortunately a known problem with no real solution :(“

Mike – I’m not sure about that. I have never heard of a veg file going bad, so if it’s a “known problem”, it’s escaped my attention for ten years.

I do agree that backups of the veg file should be sequentially numbered. They are small enough that I would really like to see it as an option.

OP – First, look for a backup or older veg file. I, too, have lost weeks of work, but it was my own fault for not making backups of my project files on a different hard disk, then my project drive died.

Steve, the missing media issue has been discussed several times on the Sony Vegas forum.

Mike, I don’t think that is what the OP was referring to. The media problem is not that it’s missing, but that it gets replaced. Worse yet, when it happens, there is no warning or error message. (I still think its a Windows problem).

The OP said: “I tried to open the project and a dialog box popped up telling me that some files were not recovered completely or something like that and it had 2 options. I get that dialog box every time and I usually never have any problems when I just press continue. ”

This is *missing* media, as if the media drive letter changed (external drives) or the media files were renamed or moved.

Steve, it’s the “or something like that” comment that needs clarification to help solve this problem.
