  • missing clips after Firewire HDV log and capture

I’ve been on FCP 6.x for three years and just noticed this today. Capturing from JVC GY-HD110 via Firewire HDV:

At initial screen, I input the clip name with the log and capture utility incrementing the suffix at each newly created clip. An example resulting list of clips in the FCP browser might be

    Clipname
    Clipname -1
    Clipname -2
    Clipname -3

    and so on.

I captured an entire tape that containg 123 individual clips. Clip number “0” through clip number 37 were logged into the browser as expected. Then beginning with clip number 38, every third clip was missing from the browser. example:

    Clipname -36
    Clipname -37
    Clipname -39
    Clipname -40
    Clipname -42
    Clipname -43
    Clipname -45

and so on through clipname -122. It was consistently every thrid clip beginning with clip number 38, except for one instance the expected missing clip according to the pattern was there.

Thankfully, the clips WERE in capture scratch with the expected file name and properly incremented suffix. I was able to import the missing clips into the FCP bin.

I am perplexed about this one. Does anyone have any ideas or similar experiences?

I am running the latest versions of FCP 6 and Leopard.

    Hi Bill,

I had the same issue once when capturing HDV material via Sony Z1 using the ProRes codec.

The problem for me was that FCP wasn’t automatically adding the .mov file extension to the captured files, so for some reason that caused the files to be “offline”, though as with you they were all in the capture scratch folder as normal. When I renamed with the .mov extension the clips functioned again.

Not sure if this is what caused your problem though – what’s odd is that it’s only every third clip that is missing.

That’s about as much light as I can shed on this (i.e. none at all!) but I have had a similar issue to you.

    Hey Adam,
Thanks for your input. In my case, the files did have the .mov extension when I found them in capture scratch. And the every third clip anomaly is a real head-scratch-er. At any rate, I’ll continue to try to find the root cause. I will be sure and post it when I find it.
    Thanks again.

    Bill,

It sounds to me as though this could be a problem with the incrementing suffix? Maybe try naming the capture files differently – i.e. with letters instead of numbers as suffix – and see if this error happens again?

It’s got to be a problem with the file path – that’s the only thing that makes sense, especially since all the files are in the capture folder. I would try experimenting with different file names during a capture and see what happens.

Just out of interest – did you do any software updates before this error occured?
