  • Missing Audio from h264 .mov files

I just got a new DXG 567V (cheapo) camcorder that captures HD video as .mov files. I believe it uses h.264. It also has mpeg-4 audio. I can play the files on my computer fine and the audio sounds fine. But when I load them into Vegas (Pro 8), the audio track is missing. It loads an audio track, but the level is zero. I can even use a media player to play the audio and record the audio to a .wav file and line it up in Vegas, but that is a big waste of time.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I don’t have this problem with my Sony HD camcorder using .mt2 files. These come across fine with audio. It only seems to be this format or this camcorder. But with the Sony camcorder, I am capturing the files in Vegas from miniDV tape whereas with the DXG, I am copying .mov files from an SD card and loading those directly into Vegas.

The properties of one of these files is here:

    Name: FILE0003.MOV
    Folder: C:
    Type: QuickTime
    Size: 5.88 MB (6,023,683 bytes)

This usually happens when the audio uses a codec that Vegas doesn’t support. You will need to use some other program to trans-code these files into a format that Vegas can edit.

See if my suggestion in the Vegas problem with mov thread helps.

I am having EXACTLY the same problem. I tried updating Quicktime to see if it was a codec issue, but no joy, i’m still getting the flat audio file. I’m currently in the process of updating to Vegas Pro 8.1 to see if that helps. If all else fails, i’m going to try ripping the audio into a seperate track using another program and then importing in to vegas, but this is a major headache. I was hoping to use this camera for a lot of video i bring into vegas, but its now looking like this might not work out.

I did get QT Pro and that worked fine as I followed the idea from John Rofrano. QT handled the video and audio without crashing and it was able to output a mp4 which Vegas could load. Otherwise, Vegas crashed every time I tried to load the mov file. I just got a new Canon SD780 point and shoot camera with HD video. It produces HD MOV files in h.264. I have no problem loading those into Vegas without having to go through QT. Every camera can be different.
