After dubbing a 5 hour package out of my Avid Xpress 5.8 machine, I realized that the computer stopped at about the fourth hour with the message “Missed Frame Advance”. What causes this and how do I prevent it from happening again. My solution was to mixdown the section that gave me the trouble. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

“Missed Frame Advance” is an underrun, which means that you CPU or your storage didn’t supply the stored media fast enough to turn it back into audio and video. When Avid ran out of data, the output process stopped.

If you have a system made of Avid certified components that is known to be fast enough, make sure that you have as few windows and bins open as possible when outputting. The CPU must refresh all of them every time the screen is redrawn, and this does use up some of the resources of the computer.
