Activity Forums Storage & Archiving MiniSAS Setup

I am planning to avoid quad interface enclosures (eSata) based on the repeated recommendation in these forums. MiniSAS it is. I am on a 2007 dual quad 3.0Ghz Mac Pro (2,1). 12 GB ram. ATI Radeon 5870 (Slot 1 – x16) AJA Kona LHe (Slot 3 – x4).

Up to this point I have been doing most of my editing from single sata drives connected by Thermaltake blacx docks using eSata. Its getting to be inefficient.

I am wondering if anybody can endorse or give any recommendations on the following setup?

    iStoragePro iT4MIS (4 bay MiniSAS Tower Enclosure) – $380.00
    ATTO R380 (or the new R680?) – $400-$700 for a used R380 ($1000 R680)
    4x 3TB hitachi ultrastar enterprise HDDs – $1320

All setup as raid 5 gives a total of roughly 9TB of storage for $2,350.

I am comparing this to the Maxx Digital Evo Mini at $3200. I like what I have read on the forums about Maxx Digital and their excellent support, but would like to save $1,000 if the iStorage works.

Considering the R680 for future addition of a 6gbps enclosure.

I plan to install the ATTO card in PCIe slot 4 (x4). Is the iStorage solution going to be a PITA to configure for someone with no hands on raid experience?

    Matt,

Our ST5610-U5 SOHOTANK(6Gb backplane) 4 bay mini-SAS is $339.00 https://stardom-usa.com/product_detail.php?p_id=25&func=d#content & works great with that ATTO card R680. You can purchase it from https://www.videoguys.com

Setting up the RAID with ATTO is pretty straightforward. ATTO is also a partner of ours.

    Just a suggestion.

Thanks Jon. Are there any 3TB drives that you recommend for that enclosure?

    Matt
I am not surprised by your post. You are not alone as many companies want to save money. I can only tell you that you get what you pay for. Maxx Digital ,Caldigit,Sonnet Tech just to name a few sell solutions and when you are editing professional video footage it is very important to have support on weekends ,evenings and everything in between. Most professional companies can not endorse used gear of any kind.
So if you buy from a company like istorage you will NOT get any qualified Video workflow experience service,No advance replacements, and most of the time no one to even pick up the phone. And after hours and weekends are not even a topic at most companies. But yes you will save money and if that is your goal then you should go for it.
Maxx Digital does offer Creative Cow discounts so try asking one of the guys for a Bob Zelin CC discount and see if that helps. I can only tell you to ask Maxx Digital customers about the support we offer and then tell me what your media and the success of you company is worth. Just my two cents and we are here to help if you need anything.

    Sincerely,
