mininotebook for the field
Any comments on using the so-called “mininotebooks” (acer, dell, HP) for back-up in the field AND for basic clip browser (and also finished demos) would be greatly apreciated…. I like mininotebooks for their portability, size …. and price !!!

Don’t see why they wouldn’t work. Though I’d spring for a decent brand. It’s not really much of a savings on a laptop if you lose a days work due to a blown hard drive.

We use a MacBook Pro with FCP for our in-the-field backups, but if I wanted a cheap solution it’d be neat to try one of those minis with Flash storage instead of a hard drive. I imagine the speed, heat, and battery consumption of a mini would be preferable, and I’d be using it to put the footage on an external HDD anyway.

I’m using my MBP for the field but I would be very happy to let it at home.
Please give me more info about how would be to use one of those NoteBooks for backup in the field.
I really don’t know much about P.
How would you do it?
Copy the BPAV folders by USB to a HD?
How it would be the HD connected to the NoteBook?

If you believe in the SDHC technology like I do, you really can’t beat buying a whole bunch of 16g or 32g with 2 X MxM or MxR and save doing your dumpoffs until you are in a controlled environment.
But there are dedicated devices out there that are built for just that purpose; field dumpoffs – and about the same cost as a mini notebook.

I’m not one for me too posts but . . . me too.
There’s really no reason to take a laptop or risk a transfer (and human error) during a shoot.At least in my neck of the woods I can run down to the store and pick up a card if it looks like I’ll need more for a shoot.
The ONE thing the laptop seems to afford is that a client can screen clips on it while the camera keeps shooting.

When you work for two weeks in the field, you can not wait two weeks to back-up your rushes.
Is not a matter of money (SDHC are cheap and fails).
I want to have everything duplicated by the end of each day.

…so when you shoot in the field for 2 weeks you are staying in a tent with no power?
When I shoot in the field each night when I return to the hotel I am staying at I do the dumpoff to my MBP. Even if I was staying in a tent I could power off batteries for a few hours before I have to plug into the car battery.
The last shoot I did I even took the MBP into the downstairs bar and enjoyed a few ales with my producer while the MBP did its thing.

Thank you all !!.. the first time I saw a mininotebook I was impressed… almost all run genuine Win XP (so you can install and run clip browser, and even your NLE)… it is a very nice and REALLY portable device (sorry, but MBP and other win laptops are HUGE) also for showing clips and demos to your customers…

Hi Baz,
Normally in the field I can recharge batteries every two or three days.
The battery of the MBP is enough.
My idea was to bring SDHC enough so no need to download.
Anyway I’ve realized that I prefer to have a look every day to the work done and put my files not in one but in two HDs.
