Activity Forums Adobe After Effects MINI DV

I may be somewhat off forum but the animation i produced in after effects (Hence being here) has come back to me from the production company on a mini DV tape. The designer would like me to put the work on his showreel DVD which means it has to be capured digitally. The producion company told him the tape is from a 3 chip camera and the office manager at the designers thinks that only a 3 chip camera can be used to caputure it. As i am going to have to borrow a camera for this anyway is this what i need?
    Thanks if you know ..

That’s crazy talk. It can be captured by anthing that captures DV. The data is the data. If all you need to do is import it into a computer, and not shoot anything through the lens, you can use a little one chip camera, a DV deck, a 3 chip cam, whatever.

I assumed they shot other stuff and you need to capture the whole piece. But if it is just music, have them mail you the audio and lay it in AE then render out from there. DV has a magic way of degrading graphics so if you can avoid it, it’s always best.

Another option would be to capture just the audio off of the DV tape and match that up with the original animation. Another format would be better, of course, since miniDV level equipment is not famous for high quality audio.

Given that this sounds like an after-the-fact addon, however, maybe you should just capture the DV stream and plop it on the DVD. For capturing, any camera with a Firewire out will do just fine. The 3-chip stuff only matters for shooting.

Thanks for your advice that is exactly what i will do. Which camera is somewhat academic as the 3 chip friend is out on location and the home dv friends are all out of reach.. Better go borrowing from the shops..
    Thanks
