Mini-DV Tape Ingestion
I recently shot a musical performance with three cameras – each a different manufacturer – on Mini-DV tape. Here’s my question: to save wear and tear on each camera, I’d rather use a Mini-DV deck to ingest tapes into Final Cut. But I have advised it might be cheaper to just purchase an inexpensive Mini-DV camera to use for playback only. However, when I have tried that in the past, I’ve found that a tape recorded on one brand of camera won’t play back on another brand, i.e. a tape recorded on a Canon camera won’t playback on a Sony camera. So, do I buy a Mini-DV deck or a cheap camera? Suggestions? FYI this is SD but may be HD down the line. Thanks.

Take a look at panasonic – it usually playbacks fine tapes from sony or canon. Test your tapes before purchasing.

I meant camera, though it’s kind of hard to find cheap one on market since they’re discontinued long time ago. If you’re looking for a deck buy pro level sony, it’ll work with all tapes.
