[Glenn Romano] “I’ve connected my fairly recent MacBook Pro to a flat screen t.v using a Mini Displayport to HDMI cable. However when I use FCP 7 I do not get sound from the t.v.

Is this normal? I thought the Mini-displayport was supposed to carry sound as well as video.”
HDMI carry audio, but DVI (Minidisplay) doesn’t.
Have you ever seen an Apple Cinema Display with audio included?. No.
The audio gets out of your mac through the Audio port (minijack).

Actually, the mini displayport does carry sound. All I had to do to get it to work was enable the new monitor in the system prefs (audio/output).

    It was a breeze.

    Goog to know it Glenn.
I thought that the Minidisplay port was just a kind of mini-DVI port.
    Thanks for the info.

I’ve had experience with this…couple factors,

    1) version of MacBook pro, has to be thunderbolt, not just minidisplay plug

    2) adapter has to be able to carry sound, some minidisplay to hdmi adapters don’t carry sound

    3) you have to enable sound output through os. Alt click speaker icon in toolbar and select brand of tv as output.

    Great.
So hopefully my next Mac will have audio out through Mini Display.
My last MBP is almost one year old, so no thunderbolt.
