Migrating Media Composer 3.0 (Mac) to Premiere Pro CS6 (PC)
I’m in need of suggestions/ solutions. We have a multi episode TV show (30i/DV standard def) that has been edited with Media Composer 3.0 for several years. We now need to migrate the projects into the Premiere platform, for myself & another editor. CS6 will read the .mxf files without issue, but the trick is getting the project/sequence information into Premiere to avoid rebuilding everything from scratch. I know there was an Automatic Duck AVID>Premiere plugin afew years ago that has since been discontinued. Now that Wes from Automatic Duck is part of Team Adobe & integrating his innovations into futures iterations of Adobe products, what are my options to achieve this with the least amount of pain?

Well Automatic Duck apps are still around, and are all free:

BUT…the only Avid to Adobe option, which was the very first Duck product that Wes worked on, was Avid to After Effects. There is no Avid to Premiere Pro. You can see if it works in Premiere Pro…heck, it’s free, why not?
BUT! The duck only does SEQUENCES…not full bin structures. It was only designed to get sequences from one place to another.
Might need to stick with Avid for the current production, but move to Premiere on future ones. Maybe then they’ll start thinking about HD prodcution too. SD production? Is that STILL happening?

EDL export from Avid to Premiere doesn’t work eh?

Well, first off, that again won’t do the whole project, it will only do the sequence.
Second, and I tested this now to see, it brings in the video layer and 4 audio layers only (EDLs are very limited)…and they are not connected to the media at all. And when I try to LINK MEDIA, I don’t know where to start. The media in the Avid Mediafiles folder is all MXF, but has the avid coding for names…not the clip names. And all I have in Premiere is clip names, so how on earth I relink them is beyond me.
So EDL doesn’t seem to work, unless you want to recapture, or link to the original media. From what I can see in my limited testing.

Right, this has been the issue, that the EDL doesn’t carry over everything (titles etc) & is per sequence. There was a Premiere plug in back in 2006 that was discontinued.
